Photo: Sunday, July 24 we toured the Soudan Underground Mine State Park. In the background is the engine house that contains the hoist that lowered us into the mine (and brought us back out, of course!).

Photo: Headframe and visitor center at Soudan Underground Mine State Park. The cables which raise and lower the elevator lead from the engine house which contains the hoist.
Photo: Equipment in the power house that raises and lowers the mine elevators by cable.
Photo: Note that when the cable winds to raise the east elevator, it unwinds to lower the west elevator. The arrow on each dial shows the level for that elevator.

Photo: Top of the mine elevator which will take us far underground. Note it is about 10 degrees from vertical to follow the ore body.
Photo: A skip (mine cart) and cage, lying horizontal. This tandem was lowered and raised in the mine elevator shaft. The skip hauled ore while the cage hauled workers and supplies. Now, the cage carries tourists down to view the mine and physics lab.
