Photo: Seen on Ebay - Oct. 2014: "Designed by Rolf Ulbrich"

King = 4"

The firm of Ulbrich Spieledesign was started by Rudolph Ulbrich in 1950 by the takeover of a bankrupt concern in Vestenbergsreuth, Bavaria, Germany. Intricately inlaid chess boards were produced. In 1954, his son Rolf joined the business and it seems that it was he who expanded it in other areas, including the design of chessmen that he had produced in India. The firm still exists, run by further generations of the family - see

Although the design of the above set is slightly different to that of mine, the overall design and quality would appear such that they were most probably made by the same firm - whether this was sanctioned by Ulbrich cannot be said.

  It doesn't look as if the firm makes bone chessmen like this anymore, and I have so far seen no indication of when they may have stopped.
