Photo: Button #1 (round - approximately 1" diameter) Fine silver, plique-a-jour enamel Completely handmade by Diane Echnoz Almeyda. $250. Plique-a-jour is considered the "tour de force" of enameling. It is the only enameling technique in which there is no metal backing behind the glass. It is, therefore, quite challenging. When light passes through the piece, it resembles miniature stained glass. In this example, fine silver sheet has been pierced and sawed. Ground glass has been melted in each cell. A circular shank has been soldered onto the reverse. Many firings are required to fill each cell. Enamels used in this button are semi-opaque and opalescent.
