CS178 Assignment 1 - Bad Photos
Apr 9, 2012Public
Photo: Rolling Soda Can
Requirement 2 (Motion blur), Requirement 5 (Poor composition)
2 sec, f/9.0, ISO 100
This photo captures a soda can rolling (from right to left) on a dining table. The shutter speed of 2 seconds is too slow to produce a sharp image of the can, hence the motion blur. The random stuff in the background makes this photo poorly composed.
Photo: Wallet by the Window
Requirement 1 (Poor exposure)
0.5 sec, f/4.0, ISO 100
I put my wallet by the window during daytime and took an overexposed picture. The slow shutter speed of 0.5 sec and medium aperture opening f/4.0 were enough to make the background look completely white.
Photo: Trees
Requirement 1 (Poor exposure)
2 sec, f/36, ISO 400
This is an overexposed picture of the trees outside of my window.
Photo: Light through the door
Requirement 1 (Poor exposure), Requirement 2 (Motion blur)
3.2 sec, f/6.3, ISO 1600
I turned off all the light in my room and the only light source was coming from the hallway through my door, hence the photo is underexposed. I set the shutter speed to be so slow (3.2 sec) because I wanted to see the effect of zooming in (i.e. increasing the focal length of the lens) while the picture was being taken. The floor and the wall to the right were not really being lit that much; the effect here is a result of the motion blur caused by my zooming in.
Photo: The Ptolemaic Universe
Requirement 1 (Poor exposure), Requirement 4 (Wrong white balance)
0.5 sec, f/5.6, ISO 400
I turned off all the light in my room and lit this drawing of the Ptolemaic model using a flashlight. I used a book to block left half of the light source. The flashlight has an incandescent bulb, but I intentionally set the white balance to be "white fluorescent" to make the right half of the drawing look more reddish than it was.
Photo: Ghost cards
Requirement 2 (Motion blur)
2 sec, f/10, ISO 100
This may look like a photo of an ordinary deck of cards divided into the four suits, but if you carefully enough you will see that the spades and hearts are duplicated here. Indeed, I only laid down these two suits on the table, took a picture with a slow shutter speed (2 sec) and quickly move the camera up so that the cards will create a ghost image at the bottom due to motion blur.
Photo: Dawn or Dusk?
Requirement 1 (Poor exposure), Requirement 4 (Wrong white balance)
1/160 sec, f/5.6, ISO 100
I took this picture of the Munger Graduate Residences from across Wilbur Field during dusk. The fast shutter speed and low ISO were set to make the photo underexposed; the buildings and trees would otherwise be visible under auto settings. Moreover, the white balance was set to "white fluorescent" to make the sky look much more blueish that it looked in reality.
Photo: Tresidder Union
Requirement 3 (Out of focus)
1/15 sec, f/5.6, ISO 6400
This photo of the Tresidder Union was taken with a very short focal distance, so nothing is in focus. The lamp posts provide a very pleasant source of light which gives the photo a dreamy feeling.
Photo: Working desk
Requirement 4 (Wrong white balance), Requirement 5 (Poor composition)
1/40 sec, f/22, ISO 1000
I made the soda can stand on its tip (which is a very tricky thing to do!) and laid a lot of soda tabs next to it. The laptop behind and the angle to the desk at which I took this picture created a contrast with the can and tabs and made the composition look very strange. The white balance was set to be "tungsten" when the actual light source was a fluorescent light, so everything looks very reddish in the picture (e.g. the part of the wall to the right of the laptop should be white in color).
