Photo: Mars Hill, Maine! What a great place for a scale solar system! The LARGEST in the United States, at 100 miles long!
Photo: The solar system drive actually begins with a huge to-scale SUN, inside Folsom Hall at the University of Maine at Presque Isle (Aroostook County).
Photo: The route of the Solar System... note the scale is one mile to one Astronomical Unit (AU)... which is based on the exact distance of the Earth to the Sun.
Photo: First up, within view of the Sun's building, is tiny Mercury.
Photo: The Venus sign has seen better days, but is still easily spotted on the roadside at a local Inn.
Photo: Beautiful paint job on Venus! This is within view of Mercury, showing how close the terrestrial rocky planets are!
Photo: I think the tractor makes the whole shot. John Deer at Earth! Since the scale is one AU, of course Earth is exactly ONE MILE away from the Sun. (1.6 kilometres)
