Rocking Horses

Photo: I was asked by my brother to make a couple rocking horses for his grandsons. A friend of mine had already made a couple, so I borrowed his plans & templates and got to work...
Photo: Since I was making two horses, I figured I'd make another set of templates, using 2Dave's as the guide.
Photo: With the template material being only 1/4", I added blocks to give myself something to hold on to...
Photo: It seems to have worked pretty well!

Photo: I had to get creative with the rockers...

Photo: The original plans called for 3/4" stock. My brother wanted something a little beefier.
Photo: I planed down some 5/4 maple to 1" for the legs, rockers & stretchers.
Photo: He also wanted the bodies to be rather beefy, too, so I used 10/4 stock...

Photo: Cutting the sharp angles on the tablesaw was a real treat! A good miter gauge and 3hp saw are worth every penny...
Photo: It sure is some pretty maple!

Photo: Dowels added for alignment and strength.

Photo: Clamping was a bit of an adventure, too! Good thing I saved the cutoffs...
