Photo: Our first stop -- of course! -- was at our national champion Texas Hercules-Club (Xanthoxylum hirsutum) -- aka "tickle-tongue" for its mouth-numbing properties.
Photo: The McGinley Ranch near Harper has two champs, one of them this Texas Buckeye (Aesculus glabra var. arguta). We found the tree and remeasured it, but...
Photo: ...found this bigger Buckeye just 100 yards away, making it a new national champ!
Photo: This ranch is also home to a large Arizona Walnut (Juglans major), nominated to our list but not a champ.
Photo: At day's end, we stopped to check on the national champion Prairie Sumac (Rhus lanceolata), which exists as a shrubby specimen in most cases.
Photo: This tree was in full flower, with honey bees slavishly collecting pollen and nectar -- and making Pete a bit nervous!
